in the early 1900’s, painting with oils on photographs was widely used to add color to black and white prints.  The effect is unique and beautiful on both landscapes and portraits. A hand colored print is truly a one of a kind artistic interpretation.

Hand coloring workshops are one day (choose one or more days from above list).  All materials will be available for purchase at the workshop or you may bring your own matte fiber photograph, photo oils and color pencils to use.

Since the first cave paintings over 12,000 years ago, the artist’s creative impulse has been linked in mysterious ways to nature and spirit. In this photographic retreat we will be a community of photographers sharing ideas and exploring the beauty of the Big Island of Hawaii.  Through the group experience, individual observation, and journaling, we will seek to deepen an artistic connection with our muse.

We will make excursions each day to the black sand beach, sacred Hawaiian sites and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the Goddess Pele.  We will also be exploring the classic beauty of the human figure as we photograph models in natural settings.  Mornings at the retreat will be dedicated to reviewing work and learning creative techniques for image creation and manipulation with Photoshop.

Do you find yourself fascinated by the leaf, feather, or stone that others pass by in their pursuit of the grand vista?  There are infinite worlds within a drop of water, a crystal or a rusting car if you take a moment to explore the world up close.

During this week we will photograph the exotic flowers of Hawaii, and explore the intense colors and textures that nature lavishes upon the tropical and volcanic landscape of this island.

Through lectures, demos, and hands-on field work, you will learn to master the tools that allow us entry into the infinite worlds of macro and abstract photography.  Critiques will focus on deepening your awareness of light and composition.  You will also learn creative Photoshop techniques for refining the raw material of your image capture into a finished picture that expresses your own unique vision.
