in the early 1900’s, painting with oils on photographs was widely used to add color to black and white prints.  The effect is unique and beautiful on both landscapes and portraits. A hand colored print is truly a one of a kind artistic interpretation.

Hand coloring workshops are one day (choose one or more days from above list).  All materials will be available for purchase at the workshop or you may bring your own matte fiber photograph, photo oils and color pencils to use.

Bring a small high intensity desk lamp (Ott Light recommended) and a bag lunch.

Join Mary and spend a magical day listening to relaxing music sharing with other creative souls and creating your own masterpieces!   Maximum: 6 students.

About Traditional Darkroom Prints:

Matte surface prints from “big box” store processors are not suitable for hand coloring.  A good photo lab or independent printer can make a good matte fiber print if you do not make your own.  If you like, I can also make a matte fiber fine art print from your own negative for you to color. If you would like this service, please contact me.  mary@hawaiiphotoretreat.com.

Try re-photographing old images from the family album - these are great subjects for hand coloring.

Instructor:

Mary Goodrich is a photographer who works in 35mm and medium formats and more recently digital.  She prints black and white in her darkroom and also uses 35mm slide film for multi-media presentations.  Her style could be called romantic, or ethereal; yet her works always exhibit a classic sense of composition.

Who should attend:

These sessions are open to anyone wishing to learn and improve their hand coloring skills.
