We photographers are fortunate to live in this time of vastly expanding possibilities for artistic expression. The advent of digital capture, editing and printing, has placed tools into the hands of the photo enthusiast undreamed of only ten years ago.  In this three-day workshop you will learn techniques for tapping into these new possibilities to make images that communicate emotion and drama.

Learn how masters of photography have used pre-visualization to create dynamic images.  Learn how the elements of line, pattern, shape, texture and gesture can be used to strengthen your compositions.

On Friday evening, the festivities begin at Hiiaka House in Volcano Village with a free welcome reception, pupus, and multi-image presentation by Ken and Mary Goodrich.  We will give an overview of the opportunities to learn the latest techniques in digital capture and the timeless techniques of composition and pre-visualization.

Saturday will start with classroom training in the morning. We will cover pre-visualization, composition and camera techniques including shooting RAW, getting the best exposure, understanding histograms and shooting panoramas.

Saturday afternoon we are off to photograph the stunning landscapes of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a session with a model.  Ken and Mary will help you learn to maximize the potential of your camera equipment and to create strong compositions that express your personal vision.

On Sunday morning we will continue our classroom training with critiques on some of the previous day’s images and a discussion on how to improve them before we head out to capture the beauty of the Hamakua Coast and our radiant model.

Who should attend

This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in further developing their photographic skills.  Participants should bring an SLR camera and the instruction manual.

Instructors:

Ken and Mary Goodrich, co-founders of Hawaii Photo Retreat, have been photographers for over 20 years.

Their photographic area of expertise has been primarily landscape and nature photography using natural light.  Their work has been shown internationally and has won numerous awards.

Mary works in 35mm and medium formats and more recently digital.  She prints black and white in her darkroom and also shoots 35mm slide film for multi-media presentations.  Her style could be called romantic or even ethereal; yet her works always exhibit a classic sense of composition.

Ken has embraced digital photography and studied with masters Bill Atkinson and Charles Cramer.  His work shows power and drama in both black and white and color. He shoots nature images, abstractions and figure studies. He often integrates his images into projected multi-media presentations with music.
