Seventy million years of volcanic activity have sculpted Hawaii Volcanoes National Park into an otherworldly landscape clothed in lush rainforest and vast surreal expanses of desert-like lava fields. Join us as we explore this UNESCO World Heritage site from a photographer’s point of view. This is a unique and wild region of Hawaii, worlds away from the manicured tourist spots of Kona or Waikiki.
Hamakua means the breath of God, in Hawaiian; a perfect name for these forty-five miles of dramatic coastline.
The Hamakua coast is blessed with cascading waterfalls, a profusion of flowers, deeply carved gorges blanketed in lush tropical foliage and plantation towns reminiscent of the Hawaii of 100 years ago. Our exploration of the coast will provide you with an abundance of photo opportunities.
Who should attend
Photographers of all levels are welcome. You should be comfortable with the manual exposure operation of your camera.
Instructors:
Ken and Mary Goodrich – co-founders of Hawaii Photo Retreat
Mary and Ken Goodrich have both been photographers for over 20 years.
Their photographic area of expertise has been primarily landscape and nature photography using natural light. Their work has been shown internationally and has won numerous awards.
Mary Goodrich is a photographer who works in 35mm and medium formats and more recently digital. She prints black and white in her darkroom and also uses 35mm slide film for multi-media presentations. Her style could be called romantic, or ethereal; yet her works always exhibit a classic sense of composition.
Ken has embraced digital photography and studied with masters Bill Atkinson and Charles Cramer. His work shows power and drama in both black and white and color. He shoots nature images, abstractions and figure studies. He often integrates his images into projected multi-media presentations with music.
